I'm currently sitting in an auditorium surrounded by hundreds of little nerds and nerdettes. All are here to compete in WA First Lego League, a robotics competition.
To be honest, I've stayed pretty blissfully ignorant of all the granular details of this event. But what I do know is that there are a lot of kids here excited about making a little Lego robot move around a track board while trying to complete obstacles.
Many of these little ones are boys. Just by the nature of societal norms. I seriously am amazed at the strangeness that exudes from these prepubescent males. Much different thinking than our all girl team.
I'm not alone in this assessment. A father of one aforementioned specimen has concurred and says he's been fascinated watching how an all girl team approaches the tasks. In fact, he means to share a few of their tricks with his boy team.
And as I sit here and watch I am reminded again of how proud I am that my girls are competing. That they get to bring a different point of view into this world.
And I am thankful to Girl Scout of western Washington for sponsoring our team. It's nice to have support behind encouraging strong independent thinking girls!
And since this blog really has no other purpose or objective than to make a few observations and kill some downtime, I'll leave you dear reader with a challenge.
Encourage your youth to step outside of their comfort zones and try something new. You never know who they might inspire.
